Co-Creators with God: Finding Faith in the Creative Act
By Andy Dickson
"In the beginning, God created..."
Those first five words of the Bible set a stage that many of us are still learning to walk on. For a long time, I viewed my own creative path—from piano lessons at seven to playing shows across New Zealand and writing children’s books—as something separate from my faith. I thought creativity was just a "tool" or an "added extra." If I was writing a song about Jesus, then it was "Christian." If not, it was just something I did.
These days, I see things quite differently.
Moving Beyond "Added Extras"
The story of Genesis isn’t about God creating a finished, static world. It’s the story of God planting a garden within a chaotic world and then inviting us to help expand it. God asks us to become co-creators.
When we create, we aren't just using a talent; we are engaging with the very heart of God. Whether we are bringing something beautiful into the world or simply attempting to, we are partnering with what God is already doing among us.
Creativity as an Act of Faith
I’ve moved from seeing myself as "a Christian who is also creative" to realizing that creativity is an act of faith itself.
When we take who we are and contribute life, joy, and beauty to the world, we are living out the divine presence within us. It is a way to know the Creator more deeply.
A Creative Spirit in All of Us
You might not consider yourself an "artist." You might not pick up a guitar or a paintbrush. But the creative spirit of God is in all of us. Creativity shows up in a thousand different ways:
In the Home: Baking a meal, arranging flowers, or making a room feel welcoming.
In the Yard: Tending a garden and helping things grow.
In the Office: Finding a clever solution to a business problem or arranging teaching materials that finally "click" for a student.
In Relationships: Navigating a conflict and helping people find a way forward—that takes immense creativity!
Embracing the Journey
Whatever your expression looks like, know that it is a part of the life of God placed within you. I want to encourage you to embrace your creativity as a vital part of your faith journey.
As we engage in these acts, we learn more about God. Let’s continue to be co-creators together, bringing goodness and light into the world.
